What Are Time Additions?
Under the TVöD (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst), employees who work during unsociable hours are entitled to surcharges on their working time. KiDig calculates these automatically based on when intervals fall and which day type applies.
Surcharge Rates (TVöD Section 8.1)

The 135% rate applies when an employee works on a public holiday and receives no compensatory day off. The standard 35% applies when compensatory time off is granted.
How KiDig Calculates Surcharges
- Interval-based: Surcharges are calculated per time interval, not per day. If a shift crosses midnight or spans different rate periods, KiDig splits the interval and applies the correct rate to each portion.
- Stacking rules: Only the highest applicable rate is used for any given minute. Night work on a Sunday applies the 25% Sunday rate, not both.
- Automatic detection: KiDig recognises public holidays based on your facility's federal state setting. No manual tagging is needed.
Enabling Time Additions
- Navigate to Tariff Settings in the administration area.
- Under Time Additions, toggle the feature on.
- Configure which surcharge types apply to your facility. Not every Kita uses all categories -- church-run facilities (kirchliche Träger) may follow slightly different collective agreements.
- Save your settings.
Where Surcharges Appear
- Daily view: Each interval shows its surcharge amount in hours and minutes below the base time.
- Monthly overview: A separate column displays the total surcharge hours for the month.
- Annual overview: Cumulative surcharge hours are shown alongside the time balance.
Practical Example
An employee works on a public holiday from 7:00 to 15:00 (8 hours). With the 35% surcharge rate, KiDig adds 2 hours 48 minutes of surcharge time. The daily view shows 8:00 actual time plus 2:48 additions.
Note: Time additions increase the employee's time balance but do not change the target hours. They are treated as extra credit in the monthly and annual calculations.
